About the Producer
Alexander Vargas
Farm: La Piragua
Farm Size: 10 hectares
Alexander Vargas began his journey in coffee at just 15 years old, following in the footsteps of his parents. By age 20, he fully committed to specialty coffee—beginning more than two decades of refinement, experimentation, and dedication to quality.
At La Piragua, Alexander employs advanced processing techniques, including anaerobic fermentations, and cultivates sought-after varieties such as Pink Bourbon and Geisha. His coffees have received multiple national Cup of Excellence nominations, a reflection of his relentless pursuit of excellence.
To maintain precision and consistency, Alexander built an on-site coffee laboratory where he cups, evaluates, and classifies each lot. Beyond coffee, he strengthens the farm’s sustainability by cultivating dragon fruit—ensuring year-round productivity and resilience.
For Alexander, coffee is more than a livelihood—it is a passion rooted in tradition, curiosity, and innovation. He honors his family’s legacy while continuously pushing boundaries through new varieties and evolving processing methods.
His commitment extends to his community, where he mentors emerging producers and shares knowledge to strengthen the future of specialty coffee in Huila. La Piragua stands as a symbol of persistence, craftsmanship, and the ongoing pursuit of perfection in every cup.
