ABOUT THE PRODCUER:
Ratnagiri was established in 1920 and is owned and operated by Ashok Patre, having been passed down from Grandfather, to father to son. Mr. Ashok is a progressive. Well-travelled and bursting with initiative, he has drawn inspiration from elsewhere to step beyond the boundaries of traditional Indian coffee cultivation and processing. Brix levels are tested before harvesting. Processing includes natural, honey and fermentation experiments alongside the traditional washed.
ABOUT THE REGION:
The saga of Indian coffee began on a humble note, with planting of 'Seven seeds' of 'Mocha' during 1600 AD by the legendary holy saint Baba Budan, in the courtyard of his hermitage on 'Baba Budan Giris' in Karnataka. For quite a considerable period, the plants remained as a garden curiosity and spread slowly as back yard plantings.
Also known as Dattatray Peeta, Budan Giri is a mountain range in the Western Chats mountain range in Karnataka. Coffee in India is grown under a canopy of thick natural shade in ecologically sensitive regions of the Western and Eastern Chats. This is one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots of the world. The plantation itself is named after the range and holy man, and is located on the Dattagiri Hill.
